You're about to go travelling (lucky you!) and you are wise enough to think about taking some homeopathic remedies. But maybe you don't know which of all the thousands available you should take - and you can only carry so many.
Buying a ready-made remedy kit is a great option if you're short on time or do not already have a good collection of remedies. Or you can look at the remedy lists for ready-made kits and use those as a guide.
For those people who want to put together their own bespoke kit, I provide the following things to think about.Â
I am assuming at least a basic understanding of homeopathy, and some familiarity with a good number of remedies or access to information about indications for remedies.
In putting yor kit together, you will not be able to cover all possible scenarios. DO NOT OVER THINK IT. All going well, you won't need any remedies.
Know your limitations. In an emergency - contact local emergency services.
In other instances, you can contact your homeopath or an online acute care service.
If you're abroad, your travel insurers will be help you access medical care.
A book I highly recommend (for those of us who love homeopathy books) isÂ
"First Aid with Homeopathy" by Dr Manuel Mateu Ratera.
Common First Aid Remedies
Life being what it is, a good selection of first aid remedies should be in everyone's kit.
Aconite (for shock of anything sudden)
Arnica (soft tissue trauma including head injuries)
Calendula (wounds)
Cantharis (burns, UTI)
Causticum (burns)
Hypericum (nerve or spine injury, bites)
Ledum (puncture wounds, bites)
Ferrum phos (first stages of inflammation - from injury or illness)
Belladonna (fevers, especially high fever in children)
Urtica urens (hives, shellfish poisoning)
ABFE Emergency Essence or Bach Flowers Rescue Remedy - not homeopathy but really good to have on hand for emotionally charged situations or you don't know what else to give.
Your People risk factors
Think about who will be in your party. Travelling with small children is especially fun. Consider what problems they may face.
Chamomilla is a great remedy for over-sensitized kids that just scream and won’t settle from pain (e.g. earache during descent) or an overwrought nervous-system.
Think about what sort of acute illnesses your travelling party is prone to. For example one might be prone to gastric upsets whereas another might be more sensitive to mosquito bites.
For the first person you can think of remedies like Arsenicum alb. or Veratrum alb. for diarrhea and/or vomiting. On the other hand Nux vom & Nat mur are good for constipation (Nux vom for those who don't like to go while away from home; Nat mur for those who let themselves become dehydrated).
For the person who attracts insect bites, think of remedies such Ledum or Staphysagria.
It should go without saying, that you will want to pack remedies frequently needed by those in your party. For example, a woman needing a remedy for menstrual pain each month should think about whether she needs to take it with her (and when she gets home she can make an appointment with her homeopath so she won't need the monthly remedy).
Getting there risk factors
Think about how you will be travelling. And for how long.Â
A long haul flight will have different possible problems than a short car trip.Â
I discuss Jetlag remedies in another post.Â
Car sickness remedies include - Tabaccum, Petroleum, Cocculus, Nux vom.
Remedies for outright exhaustion may be needed for long travel times (see post on Jetlag).
Being there risk factors
You have reached your destination. What are the problems that may come up?
Weather
Will it be hot, cold, windy, snowing? Could any of that adversely afffect your travelling party? Sunburn is a common problem on vacation - see this blog for remedies for sunburn.
Will it be more humid than you are accustomed to? Think of Nat sulph cell salt. Less humid? Think of Nat mur cell salt.
Hygiene
Some countries have a reputation for travellers suffering digestive upsets. Prevention is better than cure so take the appropriate precautions with food & water. Arsenicum alb. or Veratrum alb as mentioned above are diarrhea & vomiting remedies. Others you can consider for a high-risk destination include Aloe v, China, Colocynthis, Croton tig, Cuprum, E.coli, Gelsemium, Ipecacuanha, Phosphorus, Sulphur.
China is a good remedy to have on hand for fatigue after losing a lot of body fluids.
Local infectious diseases
Will you be exposed to infectious disease? If the risk is high you can take appropriate remedies for treating that disease.Â
Homeoprophyllaxis is another option.
Flora & Fauna
Is there a real risk of encountering dangerous animals or insects? Snakes, jellyfish, hornets or other nasty insects, leeches ... Something to think about but outside the scope of this blog. Talk to your homeopath if needs be.
Activity risk factors
What activities will you be partaking of? Older couple on bus trip visiting museums & galleries will be unlikely to to suffer injuries and basic first aid remedies listed above should suffice.
More adventurous people will need to think a bit harder. The above remedies in higher potencies might be needed. Also consider
Symphytum (for bone injuries)
Rhus tox (over-use injuries, sprains)
Ruta grav (tendon injuries)
Packing your kit
Now you have chosen what remedies to take, how will you pack them? You can buy remedy-made remedy cases - some with empty vials for you to fill. You can re-purpose things like cartridge cases or lipstick organisers. Or keep it simple and find or make an appropriately sized zip-up purse.Â
Will x-ray radiation affect my remedies (such as going through security at airports)? This is a great question. In therory yes, but most people's exerperience is that the remedies are quite robust.
My recommendation is to wrap a layer or two of aluminium foil around your case. Aluminium stops radiation from getting to your remedies. A simple step to keep your remedies safe.
And, before you ask, I have never heard of anyone having trouble with remedies causing problems with customs officials.
Enjoy!
Remember that not every little thing needs a remedy. Relax and enjoy the adventure. Your remedy kit is there if you need it.
