Homeopathy & Female Hormones – A Case Study

Anya's Story

This is a case (shared with permission) that I worked on a few years ago. It illustrates how full-case taking, a wholistic overview and homeopathy are used to 'balance hormones'. 

Anya (not her real name) came to me for help with ‘female problems’.
Anya was in her early 20s and had been diagnosed with endometriosis (endometrial tissue growing outside the uterus, pain, especially associated with menstruation) and adenomyosis (when the uterine lining grows into the muscular wall causing sever pain & heavy periods).  And if that wasn’t enough, Anya was also dealing with high levels of anxiety.

The Case is Revealed

Anya had a fairly normal and uneventful childhood. Periods had started at a normal age with no real problems.
However, at age 15, her first sexual experience was far from ideal leaving her feeling betrayed & traumatised.  Anya hemorrhaged for some time after and still has nightmares.
Around this time her periods became very difficult with severe pain – sometimes so bad she would faint.

Later she was prescribed the contraceptive pill which didn’t help much – and brought some new problems. At age 20 she had surgery for endometrisos and had a hormonal IUD inserted.

Now her  periods were a little better but she developed ovarian pain at random times and then the anxiety ramped up. Anya had had anxiety for several years but now it was significantly worse.  It kept her awake at night – she would curl into ball, crying, wanting to scream and thinking the worst of everyone. It made her think everything in her world meant she is being rejected.

Family history revealed that her mother had difficult periods and sister has endometriosis.

Analysing this case

The case was of course much more detailed than what is related here. It was clear that there are several things going on.

First there is a probable genetic predisposition to period problems.
Second there is a trauma (first sexual encounter) that has not been properly addressed.
Third hormonal contraception, both the Pill and IUC, have been messing with Anya’s hormones.

I explained to Anya that her IUD was an 'obstacle to cure' so long as it remined in place. Hormonal IUDs are well known to cause anxiety. Once the IUD was removed, we could use homeopathic 'detox' remedies made from the substances in the IUD to remediate any residual effects.

At the same Anya was given a remedy for her family history (called a miasmic remedy) and a remedy individualised to her as the person she is and to her symptoms (called a constitutional remedy).

One of the remarkable aspects to Anya’s personality that helped me find her constitutional remedy was her strong preference for a particular colour.
I always ask my clients if they have a favourite colour. Sometimes the information is useful & sometimes not. In this case, it confirmed my choice of remedy.

The Outcome

Over the next few months Anya’s anxiety improved and the pain reduced.  It did take a few months to organise the removal of her IUD – progress sped up after that was gone.  Later I gave her remedies for the trauma and remediation remedies for contraceptive pill.

Eight months after starting treatment, Anya called for an acute remedy after minor accident. She was happy to say her female issues are going great – regular periods with very little pain.

The case was well on the way to complete resolution.
